Grief and Religion with Dr. Rios
Content note: This episode includes candid discussion of child loss and grief.
What happens to your faith when the prayers you were taught don't get answered the way you were promised? In this re-release, Dionne and Yvette pull a chair up to the kitchen table for one of the most honest conversations the show has held on grief and religion.
Their guest is Rev. Dr. Elizabeth "Liz" Rios — an Afro-Boricua pastor, scholar, and activist whose work braids together Mujerista theology and a fierce commitment to justice. Founder of Passion to Plant, leader of the Passion Center, and a faculty member at Fuller Seminary, Liz is the author of Don't Buy the Lie. She's also Daniel's mother — her son, "DJ," who transitioned to glory on his 23rd birthday. A high school friend of Dionne's, Liz arrives as family, and the three women move from breath to prayer to truth-telling.
This is one to listen to more than once, notebook in hand. We close, as always, with our moment of aché, breathing the names of our beloveds into the room.
