05 - Steph Cakes: Yonkers Hustle, Angie Martinez & Heavy Hitter
This week on The Heavy Hitter DJs Podcast, L. Boogs, DJ Enuff, DJ Camilo, and DJ Kast One sit down with the one and only DJ Steph Cakes — Power 105.1's Late Night Snack, the first female DJ to rep Yonkers on a major NYC station, and a proud Heavy Hitter.
Steph takes us all the way back: making LimeWire mixtapes and iPod playlists as a kid, dreaming of hosting 106 & Park, interning at the Maury Show, and faking a school letter to land a second internship at Power 105. She breaks down running errands and babysitting for Angie Martinez, leaving AT&T after her dad gave her the green light to DJ full-time, and the early days learning the fundamentals from DJ Bones in a week-straight grind.
She also gets into the Cliff nightclub era, the night she got too nice and left her laptop behind, the first time she went live on Power at 4 a.m., dealing with promoters who call her "babe," and being inspired by Coco Chanel as one of the few female DJs she saw in uptown. Plus — the years-long courtship from Camilo and Pretty Lou before she officially became a Heavy Hitter, her Urban Sports Entertainment flag football league, her gaming streams, and the origin story of "Caramel Dropa" (yes, she spits a bar).
Tu Bizcochito Favorito, in the building. Tap in.
